Best Student Factual Production:
Shades of Grey has been awarded “Best Student Factual Production” in the North-East and Cumbria 2003 by the Royal Television Society. This means that Shades of Grey is now nominated for the national awards in the same category, which ceremony will be held later in 2004. Saturday 24th of January 2004 was the regional RTS annual awards ceremony held in Newcastle, where awards for 16 different categories where presented. Among the nominations where several BBC, ITV, Channel Four and Discovery productions as well as 16 student productions from the region where 4 productions where from University of Sunderland. About Shades of Grey the jury says: ”Shades of Grey was a compelling piece — a brilliant subject-matter excellently structured and well researched”, and according to University of Sunderland’s own press release the jury were “unanimous in their decision” to award Shades of Grey the top price “despite tough competition from their fellow Sunderland students”.

Official bachelor of Art:
My results for my bachelor degree in Art, Media and Design: Media Production from University of Sunderland has currently been confirmed, and I have now officially passed the course and become a bachelor. I have received an overall class 2:1 marking for my degree, which involved practical work making media products as television programs, documentaries and drama productions, as well as radio programs and packages. Also involved in this course is a core of theory about the codes and conventions of various media output, audience studies and cultural studies, influence and psychological awareness, and industry understanding.

I am therefore now currently looking for work and if you could perhaps have use for me, please feel free to contact me via email to arrange things further. If you wish you can find my marks for the individual modules on this website, and also read about the various media products I've been involved in making. An explanation of what the various marks mean is also supplied, and you will find this just be clicking on the mark in question. Currently only 3rd year marks are shown, but hopefully soon all marks will be supplied.

American Cultural Imperialism & Media Globalisation:
'The internationalisation of television news, while unquestionably a crucial aspect of the processes generally lumped together as 'globalisation', seems paradoxically to be the least well examined, yet most alluded to, aspect of the globalisation phenomena.' (Paterson, C. Global television news services, Media in Global Context: A Reader, Oxford University Press:1997, p.145)

As Paterson points out in his article, few people actually seem to know that most television broadcasters buy international news from transnational news agencies like Rauters, Worldwide Television News and Associated Press Television. There are a few others, but the mentioned are the once with the most impact on the international news flow at the moment. This is also the very reason for theorists critique of these services - the small number of them. Or as Paterson puts it: '...since television is the major force in shaping how Europe and America see the world, and is becoming so in the rest of the industrialised world and much of the developing world, then the images selected by these few television journalists of similar training and background, are absolutely crucial determinants of how people world-wide perceiver other nations and global issues.'

News media and impartiality:
News always wish to present itself as real, as the unblemished fact from real life events. This is also why news broadcasters value live coverage highly, if there seem to be any point to this or not. For example, a reporter speaking to us over a live video link from Baghdad will seem as more of an updated expert, then somebody in London whom have studied the situation down there thoroughly. This is of course not a logical conclusion, as the reporter might sit in Baghdad with less historical knowledge, thereby painting a less accurate picture then the expert in London. However, we almost automatically accept the reporter as more of an authority speaking about this issue due to the 'liveness' of his/hers coverage.

Apart from the objectivity of the spoken word, we can also asses how impartial images presented to us really are. Are we presented with an edited montages of video, there must necessarily be a selection process involved. This rises the question of the motivations for showing certain parts and remove others, and how good a reproduction of reality this really is. Again news broadcasters value as live or recent coverage as a possible, as this is seen by the audience as less tangled with. And also again, this is an unreasonable conclusion, as also live coverage involves a selection process of where what and when to film.

Beauty:
What is beauty? How can we determine beauty or measure it? One idea of beauty was developed in Greece around year 400 b.c. Back then they tried to find measurements on what is anatomically perfect. This was mainly done to give artists an idea about how our bodies are build so they could make their artwork more realistic and perfect. For example they meant that a perfect mouth should be 1.6 times the width of the nose, and an underarm should have the same length as a foot. They developed hundreds of rules like this, and meant they could measure beauty that way. Today our main pursuer of beauty is Hollywood and the fashion industry, and they are pursuing beauty pretty much in the same way as the old Greeks did. One of the main aspects that make Hollywood differ from the Greeks is what they call 'star quality'. This is an abstract concept that is not explained and that makes the Hollywood idea of beauty a lot wider then the Greek. 'Star quality' you might say is aberrations from the norm of beauty, and also that part of a 'star' we can recognize our selves in. Brad Pitt is not anatomically perfect, but it is that exact fact the makes him hot for most people. An anatomically perfect person actually looks pretty doll and normal for most of us.

24.Januar 04:
Shades of Gery has now officially been awarded the regional top price for "Best Student Factual Production" in the North-East and Cumbria 2003 by the Royal Television Society. Among the 7 nominees in this category 3 productions where from University of Sunderland, but according to Uiversity of Sunderland's own press release the decision was unanimous to award Shades of Grey the top price.

19.November 03:
Shades of Grey has been nominated for a regional Royal Television Award for North-East England. Of all the nominees were 4 productions from University of Sunderland selected to compete for the top prices in two categories - best factual and best non-factual student production. The results will be ready in January when the award ceremony will be held.

02.October 03:
The Norwegian part of this site has been shut down temporarily as the text is being reviewed. As soon as this process is done the page will be back up with both parts open live.

The production of the showreel CD-ROM is currently on hold until the media that will be featured on it is digitized. Meanwhile this site will work as a showreel and portfolio, but the video will not be available.

11.September 03
Finally has jaxeed.com become multilingual, and is now available in both norwegian and english. This does of course mean twice as much work to update the webpage, but probably the two different parts will develope unequally. The versions are not completely similar, even though most of it is the same.

The reason for the flat theme above is basically just to celebrate the opening of the refreshed site, and the flags will be removed in a week or so. You will also find certain other changes to the page as the new window feature for all the MP3s, which is basically to avoid what some browswers do which is leaving the entire page and opening a player. Now all the MP3 playing will happen from a seperate window, so no worries of losing track of your jaxeed.com browsing. ENJOY!

14.August 2003:
I have been to the meeting at Fabelaktiv now, and I might be called in to do freelance work for them. I am for that reason considering if I should get an additional job somewhere aound here and take whatever media work I can get from them, or move around to where ever I can get enough freelance work to survive.

This is also the reason I've put up the 'Qualifications' page, so that anyone can see in more detail what my qualifications are and what I have experience in. For anyone interested in a showreel and/or a meeting, please do not hessitate to contact me by going to the contact section of this site. Additional contact information will be given via email.

11.August 2003:
The website is now up again after the privat server I was allowed access to up til now went down again, and most likely will stay down. I have therefore signed up to a new host for this site, and will most likely introduce this host as an affiliate in the future if any of you would like to do the same. This host is fairly resonable on pricing and very reliable, which is one of the most important aspects when choosing a host.

I have now also moved to Norway looking for a job in the media industry here, and will have a meeting / job interview on wednesday this week for Fabelaktiv which is a successful Norwegian media company. Currently I'm looking for a place to live IF i get a job at Fabelaktiv, and is of course shocked of the prices in Norway. (£4-5 for a pint, and sometimes only 0.4L) In other words not the country to buy a round for your mates.

Some new features has been added to the page too, if the text in the rolling news window moves to fast you may simply move the cursor over it to stop it, and even click it if you wish to open the news center which contains all the news enetered to the page. The mailing function does also work, but with a couple of hours delay unfortunately.

07.July 2003:
The results from my bachelor degree has just been confirmed, and I am now a verified bachelor from University of Sunderland in Art, Media and Design: Media Production. The marks I have received was overall quite satisfactory in my eyes, though some modules where probelms with group dynamics occurred received not so good marks as expected.

I am now therefore currently looking for work, and have already a job interview at the end of this month. Hopefully I will be offered some work in the Norwegian media company Fabelaktiv, but more about this will be reveiled at a later date.

19.June 2003:
My latest documentary project has now been added to the website, and you can read about it under projects - shades of grey. The production is finished and had received good critiques on the screening in May, and might even be nominated for an RTA (Royal Television Award) according the the university lectures and tutors.

16.June 2003:
After being offline for quite a few weeks jaxeed is back online, but on a new server. The old server was sold and before the original administrator of this server got the chance to copy his clients webpages it was picked up by the new owner. This is the unfortunate coincidence that has kept me offline for quite a while. The news hasn't been updated much neither as I've been way to busy with many of my projects.

To minimise the size of the webpage the free MP3's has been removed, but to compansate for this more of my music will be available as short mp3 examples soon. A couple of new features will soon be available too as a free stuff section, but I can still not promise a date for this as I have many balls in the air at the moment.

25.April 2003:
Just come back from Boston after a 3 day shoot for a documentary about madness and in particular schizophrenia. I can not reveile whom our main character in this documentary is at the moment due to copyrights and privacy, but more will be reveiled on a later date.

A fresh new webcam feature has been installed to jaxeed.com, but unfortunately it seems my ISP does not approve of uploading jpegs every 5 seconds, however the problem might perhaps be more local then that. The window will be left where it is till the problem is resolved, but will be regretably off air most of the time.

09.April 2003:
The webpage has not been updated much the last month due to me being very busy with the various projects on university. However, some updates have been done now, and under projects you can read more about the latest documentary that have been finished.

Even though the box against the war on Iraq has been removed, I still strongly question USA's intentions in Iraq, and I have yet to be proven wrong here and therefore strongly oppose to the war. Also I'm frankly quite shocked of the very partial media coverage of this war, something I will be writing more about as soon as I have more time.

28.February 2003:
The site is recently been made fully compatible with Mozilla and thereby also newer versions of Netscape. There are still some problems with Opera and Macintosh, but the site is at least more compatible with these browsers too, though, the news scrolls does not work properly and there are some graphic problems.

A subject is chosen for the new documentary that will be finished in May. More information will be available as soon the proposal and treatment is done, which will be fairly soon. But I can reveille at this point the keyword 'schizophrenia'.

16.February 2003:
I have just been down to London and participated in the peace march 15th of February and the turnout was amazing. The organisers say 2 million people marched, and Guardian reports 1.5 million demonstrants.

Which ever estimate is more correct, it is a record for a demonstration in London. 3000 busses were parked around Hyde Park, and some had to leave quite early with their lot to arrive home before late night. However, there were 750 000 demonstrants left in Hyde Park til it officially ended 12AM.

11.February 2003:
The webpage is now made more compatible with Mozilla and Netscape. Work on making the it compatible with Opera and hopefully also soon Macintosh IE and NS is commencing.

Feedback on the webpage so far has been almost merely positive, all thought parts will be re-writting and reworded for looks sake.

01.February 2003:
The radio play which I wrote and directed is now available for you to download and listen to. It is 25 minutes worth of sound, and is compressed to about 10MB of MP3 stereo.

To listen to the play please click your way to 'projects' - 'crash test dummy'. A link to the MP3 example is supplied there.

31.January 2003:
Finally the webpage is up and running, even though all elements is still not available. Most of the reading is ready, but there might be some problems with certain MP3s. This will be addressed soon though.

The shop is currently closed and I can not yet promise a opening date. When the shop opens you will be able to buy records and CDs with my music using your VISA or Mastercard.

The games arcade does only contain one game so far. As soon as I've had the time to program more games they will be posted, but as things look now this may take a while. Enjoy.

Today is also my birthday, making the webpage launch day the same as my birthday. I will probably go out tonight celebrating a little, but not much as the nightlife in Sunderland isn't much to speak of in my eyes.

27.January 2003:
Semester 1 of the 3rd year of my bachelor degree is now over, giving me just about enough time to finish this webpage. However, due to internet service provider problems the launch is delayed further.

The finishing touches on the page layout has been done, and work on the contact section has started hopefully to be finished next week. A theme system has also been employed to give the graphics a different feel according to seasons.

25.January 2003:
All work with the radio play 'Crash Test Dummy' is now done, and the entire play will be available on this webpage soon as compressed MP3.

The feedback on the radio play has been merely positive after it was played for an audience on the university. I've been told it will be available on the university webpage, as well as being broadcast on Utopia FM.

To read more about this, please look on the 'projects' section.
